The charm of a child lies to a great extent in his narcissism, his self-contentment and inaccessibility, just as does the charm of certain animals which seem not to concern themselves with us, such as cats and large beasts of prey.”

-
Sigmund Freud, on the allure of narcissistic women, in “On Narcissism: An Introduction.”

For modest cat ladies such as myself, this quote really puts things in perspective. To understand why men are often drawn to self-absorbed, unavailable women, I need only think about my own love for my hotshot cat. It’s kind of the same thing, according to Freud.

Photo Essay: Paperweights of Despair

When I was in third grade, I went to an art class once a week after school. I remember that year as a relatively carefree one for me, but maybe that was just because all of my more difficult feelings were being sublimated into the creation of these disturbing clay paperweight faces.

Paperweight #1

Paperweight #1

Paperweight #2

Paperweight #2

Paperweight #3

Paperweight #3

Dungeons & Dragons Prison Ban Upheld

Dungeons & Dragons Prison Ban Upheld:
When the real revenge of the nerds happens, the judges on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals will be the first to die.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
For me, the expression, “It’s like learning to ride a bike,” will now always mean, “It’s like learning to do something that everyone else learned at age 5 from their parents, but you learned at age 30 from an elderly volunteer, in a free class, with a bunch of Chinese people.”

I think it’s still a useful metaphor for life.

"I tried to do a chat with you, but it made an email."

“I tried to do a chat with you, but it made an email.”

- My roommate Emalie, using Gchat for the first time in her life this morning, and revealing in the process that she is at least 35 years older than I thought she was.

Iranian television airing a Lord of the Rings marathon "as part of the government's effort to restore peace"

Iranian television airing a Lord of the Rings marathon "as part of the government's effort to restore peace":
I’m not convinced that this is the right kind of TV marathon to lull people into staying home and not protesting a fraudulent election.

This book is filled with stories that are, in the words of Uncle Arthur’s preface, “both factual and helpful” and “guaranteed to make bad children good and good children better.” No wonder the kids in this picture are having such a hard time looking thrilled.

So I was disappointed when Wikipedia informed me that wanderlust is a German word that literally translates to “an enjoyment of hiking.” Hiking?? Hiking isn’t nearly as sexy as wandering!

But, as an activity that involves pre-planned trails, hideously sensible footwear, shorts with well-engineered pockets, and way too much contemplation about where/when/how to dispose of your own poop, hiking is undeniably much more German.

Sean and Louise Discuss the $1 Coin

me: i like how the wikipedia article about dollar coins points out that susan b. anthony was "the first non-fictional woman" to appear on any currency
